Cementos Pacasmayo becomes the first company in Peru to obtain an Environmental Product Declaration from the GlobalEPD Program for cement, verified by AENOR

  • An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), also known as a Declaración Ambiental de Producto (DAP), is a technical document that analyzes the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle, with the aim of promoting more sustainable practices.
  • The products and plants that obtained the EPD were: Fortimax (Pacasmayo and Piura plants), Extraforte, and Type I (Pacasmayo, Piura, and Rioja plants).

In order to reaffirm its commitment to the environment, Cementos Pacasmayo has obtained the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) from the GlobalEPD program for three of its cement products. This recognition was granted by the Spanish Association for Standardization and Certification (AENOR) and aims not only to provide verifiable information about the environmental impact of its products, but also to reinforce the company’s purpose of promoting responsible practices in the construction sector, facilitating comparison based on environmental criteria and fostering transparency in every project.

“We are proud to become the first company in Peru to obtain an EPD for our cements. This milestone represents significant progress toward the legacy we seek to build as a company for the industry and the country. At the same time, it strengthens our commitment to continue promoting sustainable and transparent practices that create value for our customers, the market, and future generations,” said Humberto Nadal, CEO of Cementos Pacasmayo, during the certification ceremony, which was attended by Diego Herranz, AENOR’s Regional Director for Latin America.

The EPD is a standardized document that provides quantitative and verifiable information about the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. This recognition, based on international standards such as ISO 14025, was made possible through a comprehensive life cycle assessment conducted for the following Cementos Pacasmayo products and plants: Fortimax (Piura and Pacasmayo plants), Extraforte, and Type I (Piura, Pacasmayo, and Rioja plants). The analysis followed a “cradle-to-grave” approach, quantifying both direct and indirect impacts from raw material extraction, processing, packaging, transport to customers, use, and final disposal.

The preliminary analysis carried out by ECOAMET resulted in the calculation of the Product Carbon Footprint as well as other environmental indicators for the company’s products. Subsequently, AENOR verified and validated the results presented. This recognition reflects the cement company’s efforts and commitment to reducing CO₂ emissions and continuously improving its processes. Obtaining the EPD not only demonstrates its environmental responsibility but also adds value for customers, who benefit from an additional guarantee regarding the quality and sustainability of the products. These efforts are aligned with the Sustainable Construction Technical Code, which establishes technical requirements to ensure that buildings or developments meet basic sustainability conditions, promoting the use of eco-materials and products accredited by their manufacturers.

“Transparency, sustainability, and competitiveness are the criteria that summarize what an EPD represents for the companies that obtain it. At AENOR, we will continue to rigorously assess companies whose purpose is to build a more responsible Peru committed to environmental care,” said Diego Herranz, AENOR’s Regional Director for Latin America.

Building a more sustainable country

Cementos Pacasmayo’s vision is aligned with the highest expectations of the sector to build a better country. In this context, obtaining an EPD contributes to this objective by promoting the use of eco-efficient solutions recognized by sustainable construction certifications. For example, LEED certification considers the use of products with verified EPDs under the “Materials and Resources” and “Building Product Disclosure and Optimization” categories.
